I have a pair of old school Cabela's I plan to be buried in some day. Same thing, tongue used to squeak off and on, noise when I'm walking anywhere drives me mad.
I make my own wax which is about half bee's wax half shea butter, making a couple of kilos of this costs a bit less than a couple of tins of shop bought. Melt it on a very low heat, apply a coat, heat the leather a little with your hair dryer (don't use your curling tongs) and then rub in with a soft cloth. I put extra in the seams, stitches and anywhere leather touches leather. I repeat this as many times as I can be arsed, usually three. It takes time but they only need be done like this a few times a year, a few weeks before periods of heavy use.
They'll never be shiny, smelly, squeaky or leaky and they'll forgive you years of the harshest abuse.
