Just more shit you don’t need in your pack. Never done it in 30 years. Flowing back country waters fine.

@kukuwai yes. Hydrapak released their own water filter mid 2023. Robust lid design.

Squeeze water filters are great for clear water sources but will clog up in sediment/boggy water sources. A pump model would be better in these scenarios. But in those scenarios, you'd probably want to use tablets and boil as from memory the filter models don't kill the viral nasties.

I drink fast flowing water in the bush - been good

But.... in any area where people - especially tourists - might take a dump I am much more careful... will look for a small side creek/trickle with poor foot access and fill up there, on the basis they are too lazy to go anywhere steep. The fact we have Giardia hotspots in NZ is sad. I have a filter for anywhere the water is dodgy but rarely need it.

The amount of poo by some tracks and campsites is awful. Even at some chopper drop-off points high in the southern alps if you lift a rock... there are some filthy bastards out there that should learn how to shit in the bush properly. Bury it well away from water - seems fairly simple and concise instructions to me.

Some people will be fine drinking any water and others will get sick just looking at it, prime example is Indians drinking from the river ganges with dead bodies floating past but if we were to drink it we would probably die.

I always drink running water from creeks when out hunting, so far no issues touch wood.

I never have filtered water, but recently I’ve purchased two different filter systems after encountering sone pretty stagnant shitty looking water on a trip.
I’ve got the Grayl bottle, yet to receive it and the Sawyer filter that I’ve couple with two foldable bottles.
I love gear and thought I’d see how they go.

Craig dont push it with the Sawyer in thick water (particles, debri in it) It will clog up. Bring the big plastic syringe if you do to flush it out when you hit fresh running water.

    Purifying water

For several years I have used tincture of iodine [from a local chemist] from a very small eye droppper bottle 10 DROPS per litre shake and let settle for 30 minutes before consuming....never had any issues

Lad drunk from a stream he shouldn’t have and ended up with campylobacter. I’ve had Guardia and ended up shitting white like a dog.

Just picked up a couple of sawyer in line filters that you can screw to the top of a bottle. Will give them a go.
