Next time I have a winter tipi trip I intend building a stone heat sink around three sides of my tent stove to reduce the direct radiant heat and store some of it.

The mass of a rock hearth might help to slow heat loss after you turn in for the night
It would also be a guard against any of your gear making direct contact with the fire box which is often glowing red
Down side would be it would take up some space in an already small area

That’s a great idea Akaroa, I’m into the Ruahines this weekend and will be using this . Set up was easy , it’s not all tall as I thought but Ben from MIA is only a short fella so made it look bigger haha. Fire was easy to start with dry wood and certainly warms the tent up pretty fast , rocks around it too hold heat would be awesome.

@300Shortmag Is there or was there an option for a wall liner ?

Makes a massive difference to the temperature / fuel use and also cuts condensation getting on your gear to nil

No full liner, there's an optional seperate pole frame that eliminates the centre pole (adds about 8kg). It pulled up nice and tight with just the centre pole so would be even better with the internal frame and no centre pole . Then you can hang anything light or heavy from the top. It also has a bathtub floor and a seperate insect liner that would cover half the area. There's two big vents in the roof. It probably stood around 190 cm tall and was 3 meters wide . Surely the condensation can't be any worse than a small tent?

Condensation with a single skin tent of any kind can be pretty bad

Most conventional recreational tents are fly and liner with air flow between and the liner keeps the condensation away from your gear

The condensation is in the morning when the fire has gone out over night

    You will be fine
I doubt you will be at minus 10 plus like I use mine in

Thanks Akaroa1, I got given a 10 x 12 army tent. Green canvas, No floor.
Has a center pole and high sides. Was thinking about buying a silicone vent and putting a Oz Pig stove in it for a heater. It would be a base camp setup.

See any issues apart from bulk.

Well if running an OZ pig I would get a decent stove jack
My preference is the chimney near the center pole because it's moves the least there in the wind

But plan out how you will use the space before fitting the stove jack

While my tipi, liner and stove are a carry in weight I have used it a fair bit when hunting from the vehicle and it's very quick to set up.

A heavier tent or tipi with a bigger stove with more mass would be better if not wanted for carry in trips.
