    Winter sleeping gear

    Hi all
Looking at buying a winter sleeping bag. Weight is an issue, money is not! I hunt in the South Island, right through winter and have had enough of using a thermal liner plus thermals and so on… has anyone any experience with the Rab mythic and mythic ultra range, or the Kuiu range of bags? How about sleeping pads, am looking at the nemo tensor extreme.
    Any advice is appreciated
    Cheers

I have a sea to summit Spark IV. They have just changed their range so may be call something different now. Use a Nemo tensor long wide mat and rate them both. I was looking for light weight. The mat is slightly heavier than some but it has a 4.2R value and I don’t roll off it.

I have the Rab Mythic, great bag. Outer fabric feels delicate but I haven't damaged it in two years of use. I use a liner which makes it very warm.

For a winter bag you want 850+ fill power down and about 650 grams of it for a minus 9-10 c bag.
Look for a good brand with these specs. You can decide what sort of outer material you want. Heavier or lighter fabric.

In your sleeping pad look for a R value of 6 or more for winter camping. The Nemo Tensor gets good raps and not too heavy. I use a down mat 9, good pad larger and heavier but fair trade off for winter.

Rab mythic 600 for me, absolutely stunning.
Just get a cheap light liner to take out and wash after use, washing down bags sucks.

I have a One Planet bag and xthurm pad find its a great combo

My bag is a summer one but if its extra cold i take my down quilt to put over top and find this combo runs really hot even in a tent and normally wake up with no quilt on me.

I've been wondering about a variation on this combo . . . Decent quilt for 3 seasons, supplemented by a lightweight bag for high country winter conditions. Anyone tried it?

I also found both together pack's down smaller than my winter macpac bag and in theory has much more down and is definitely much warmer. can also take the quilt out and use it when glassing

I would try Blair at Wear on Earth ChCh. His catalogue says they dont do sleeping bags but I have heard he does worth a try for sure. He uses quality down, not all down is equal !

Hi, very happy with my ONE Planet Bushlite-15 bag and Exped Downmat HL Winter mat purchased from Southern Adventure in Invercargill, they offer great discounts with their loyalty card and even better discounts when they have a sale.

Thanks for the input all. I will probably go with the mythic 600 and tensor extreme mat

chucking one of the old style closed cell foam mats underneath will do wonders for warmth too.... Ive got one of the flash inflatable jobbies but last two nights out Ive used just the old mat and been warm as toast inside bivy bag with macpac 650 bag. mind you was pretty pickled when crawled into it last weekend LOL.
