I wear the wool shearers singlets and tee shirts all the time for hunting. have a possum merino jersey that i keep for my shtf clothing when in fiordland. also merino under garments. the merino longjohns are no good with shorts though , I destroyed a new pair in one day . also have a pair of possum socks with the leather outside still for camp slippers/sleepwear. they are super toasty.

The possum merino gear is amazing , but it is all aimed at rich tourists , not much workwear etc.

I'm researching various options, and I've been looking into what the Scandinavians are into, as they've got a very long history of wool use.

I discovered something called Vadmal which is a type of felted wool - supposedly quite waterproof and very warm. The fabric was once used as a currency in Scandinavia (hundreds of years ago). I'm half Swedish myself, and I think I may have actually come across some of the stuff before - but I can't quite remember. Should probably get in touch with my parents.

I'm curious to know how it compares to your standard NZ wool options: Swanndri etc.

@norsk @Sideshow Have you guys stumbled onto the stuff? Be very interested to hear your thoughts on it if you have.

    Cheers,

Sorry @Frodo I’ve not come across the stuff. But I do have a very nice possum wool mix beanie that is bloody warm even when soaking wet. I no how rough you farmers are @Ryan_Songhurst please note that it won’t last off you use them to calve cows wipe your hands decrease the tractor and at the end of your day use it to dry yourself down after you step out of the shower they are good for taking the shock out of you electric fence though.....I’ll let you get away with that one

But yes I had some socks made out of the possum mix stuff lasted about a month with usual ware warm but..

I use a late 80s swanni. Very thick and itchy but works a charm.

I can't justify the cost or Merino wear especially since it lasts less then polypro for me. The only possum, merino I have is a pair of gloves super warm even when wet but just don't last for the cost.

I have a woollen shearer’s t shirt for summer hunting that I bought from the Norswear shop and thought it was great, I wanted something the didn’t get cold when I sweat like cotton, or stink like plastic. I’m on the look out for woollen trousers now.
    Reading with interest.

The normal swandri jerseys are only 65% wool. I looked at my norsewear one and was surprised that the tag said 100% wool, even though it looks very similar. Goes to show not everything's made the same

I think its not aimed at work wear because it doesnt wear that well when you work in it. Well not for long and it will soon have wear patches on it.
If it did i would have more of it.

I dont overthink the wool singlet thing and just buy black woolen shearers singlets from Farmlands. I wear two if its cold. Dont wash them with normal detergent as that destroys wool faster than Silverfish.

The best price I received was $7.40. 32 years ago. The wool industry needs a kick up the arse - they have served farmers poorly. They have gone nowhere in the 40 odd years since the wool board was disestablished, and now I see there is talk of going back to that centralised model.

And as an aside, in the worst of NZ conditions Swandri's are death traps. Terrible damned things. Heavy and soggy. Never dry out and the wind cuts through them like a knife turning your body into the contents of an insulated fridge.

When people exhort wool for hunting in they should say what they are comparing it with and how they are using it. Layering with good synthetics with a wind shield as an outer is hard to beat.
