I'll stick by what I said thanks R93 ,40+ years DTL ,Skeet & Sporting taught me about lead for those but steel changed the rules.
No more than 1/4 choke & shoot straight at them or half the lead you use with leed. If they too high for leed steel will knock them down.
Gun control means using both hands

    You can defy physics😆

Look up 10m, 15m and 20m velocities of both lead and steel shot of equal charge and weight.
Then explain how you halve lead between the 2 please.
Bare in mind a good lead load of Gamebore claims say 1300 fps at the muzzle and some steel claims 1600fps.
300 fps even if maintained at say 25m is not enough to halve or have no lead.
300 fps difference at say 20 yrds equates to mere inches not feet or yards

My very limited shotgun experience is that steel is more shitter than lead?
    But as I said limited.

As already mentioned, cover the skin up. Your face will look like a beacon to the ducks when you look skyward, keep still until it's action stations. Good luck & have some safe fun

Spot on further to this because the steel is lighter, it loses velocity faster. So at range it is on par with lead shot or even slower, therefore steel at range requires even more lead as the lead has more weight and more momentum.

If you do find a pond and a friendly farmer then spend some time improving the habitat of the pond!
Fence it plant it build some duck nesting sites (I'll post this later) also when you build your Miamai plant some honeysuckle at the same time it makes for good natural camo.
Toitoi not so good sharp leaves but flaxs is willow easy to plant.
Bottom line is if the farmer sees you putting in the effort and improving his land as well as maintaining it you will get a good rep.
Plus all round, might even lean toward some rabbeting and possum shooting.
Miamai build for cheap and easy use forklift pallets, a few on the floor dismantle a couple to fill in the holes chicken wire to stop them becoming slippery and then a few for walls.
Once you see where the ducks flight lines are coming from you can then move it or make a more permit structure.
    Loads of fun
    Good luck to you

Don't get hung up on being a numbers shooter . yes we strive to get that "Bag limit". Enjoy it for what it is , its a whole lot of things and not always numbers . I always remember the small quirky shoots , 3 green heads for 3 shots for a morning rocks my world, much more than 25 ducks for as many misses . Can be frustrating in the beginning but stick at it and you will enjoy the an opening day more than a kid on christmas day . Good luck munsey

Having mates that do duck shooting and building new friendships is the way to go, you learn much from them and much of the fun in duck-shooting is the company you are with, the meat the icing on the cake. At least that's the way I see it.

Ended up with two greys and two parries. Was feeling a little sorry for myself, but think I did OK considering I haven't fired a shotgun for 4 years and have never been duck hunting before. Thanks for the advice.

If you can't call properly then don't. Follow ducks with your eyes only.
