Our Birds Out Here In Nevada

As I am now older and damaged from a fall off a roof last year, I am hunting upland game birds more and big game less now.

Here are some of what we hunt in my area.

Wife just requested a honey-do, so I'll post more later.

I would love to see your game birds!

Those last two photos are of mule deer and blue grouse country. The dog is my old Llewellin, Rocky, with my friend the elk guide.

Rocky knows his stuff. Jim shot the bird, but Rock retrieved it to me.

Your Mule deer and Blue Grouse country is very similar to Central Otago where I live. We also have a dry climate with hot summers and cold winters. Local gamebirds are Ducks, Canada geese, California Quail and some Chukar. Apart from millions of rabbits we also have goats, pigs, Fallow and Red deer, the odd Chamois, and Wallabies are also creeping into the area. Most gamebird shooters use 12 gauge semi-autos and a few 20 gauges as well. We have to use steel shot for waterfowl (12 gauge only so the 20's can still use lead). .22's and .17 HMR's are the main small game calibres, and centre-fire calibres are .223, .243, .270, 7mm-08, .308, .303. and .30-06 predominately, although just about every other centre-fire calibre has been used at some stage. We have a game bird season only. All other game is open season with no limit. We have good fishing as well!

    doc,

As a young guy I almost tried to emigrate to NZ. It was easier back then. The only things stopping me were my then wife, family, money, your "foreign" language, and...did I say money?

I wish I could spend a few months there and hunt 'n fish the whole time.

Most of us communicate with grunts so you will be fine. The true test for people thinking of immigrating, is being able to drive a car and eat a hot pie one handed at the same time without spilling the contents . All kiwis can do this

Enjoying the pics, nice choice of dog breed too!

It should be duck soup for me then. I can eat a taco in one hand with a beer in the other and drive with my knees.

I was especially proud of my once-in-a-lifetime Ms Scarlet. She was semi-famous and that one special dog that will never come along again.

She LOVED to hunt, and quail were her favorite. There were lots of them and lots of action.
    [img][/img]

She was also the Classic setter grouse dog. These three ruffed grouse were taken near my little second home in NW Montana. I was fortunate to inherit the home in a grouse honey-hole area.

We both got older and fatter over the years. I sure miss Scarlie..
