Working a new Hive site this afternoon on a farm close to home and had a young Ringneck hen walk out in front of us with week or so old chicks. Property has great habitat for birds and bees LOL, gorse, willow, blackberry, honeysuckle, inkweed and miles of barberry hedges. Cock birds calling all around too

Still haven’t seen any chicks – either quail or pheasant but the hawks are flying very low – so I guess they are onto it
Plenty of cock pheasant scrapping going on – often two cocks after one hen - so they are still on the job
Quail are entertaining – seem to be real performers and will come in very close – I was down at the cattle yards today and one Cali cock just wouldn’t stay away
He seemed focused on the seaward view – just wouldn’t turn round to look at me – about 8m away –

So I had to go round the yard to get his better side – about 4m away – no fear – do hunters still shoot them?
