As the title suggests we hunted a gravel pit on a dairy farm this morning. We last shot it a month ago and had good success then. With the gale force nor westers overnight and rain before dawn we didn't really know what to expect. There were only a pair of parries there which we quietly put off on arrival.
There had been quite a discussion over decoy placement. We ended up putting out 30 floaters in two tight groups either side of the two mai mais. We also had a robo duck facing into the wind at the far end.
Settling into a cuppa tea at 6:50am - not bad. By 7:15 it was time to stand too. A whistle of wings and the first mallard was hovering above me high and left. One shot from the beretta and he was paddles up in the water.
From then on in through to 10am when we packed up all the gear it was busy with customers regularly dropping back in. Good concealment and blacked out faces got the job done.
33 was the total for just under three hours shooting. The calling was good some of the shooting not so good but all in all a good morning.
Plenty of nice fat drakes to pluck for the freezer and a few parries for the sausage bag !!
The gravel pit - the birds love it.
