Haven't read the code for quite some time but i thought when there was an unlicensed shooter there should only be one firearm between them and the license holder. could be wrong.

I didnt know that TB I will do some research. I grew up different as well and cant see a problem if you trust them with a firearm they are competent with.

The law is the law. Just because it is an ass at times does not give us the right to breach it. I break the law, but if I get caught it is nothing but a fair cop and I will take my medicine.

I think its a fair call. I have nothing to fear, but the Rangers do. And that's damn sad.

I bet some of the boys end up wishing they left the double browns at home this season.

If you wanna be precise. Of course, he will officially own them when he gets his licence. But as far as he is concerned they are his and I address them as his.

Yeah I don't want to say too much here cause things are a little different out in Kokatahi than Auckland and I know what sort of response I'll get.... The boys I let shoot with me have been shooting since 5 years old and I'd trust them with anything at all but they are unlicensed.

Is it law or just in the arms code? I will continue to supervise my kids with firearms the way I was.

"No matter how old you are, if you do not have a firearms licence but want to use a firearm, you may do so only under the immediate supervision of someone who has a firearms licence. In other words, the person with the licence must be with the shooter, and close enough to take control of the firearm if necessary. To meet this requirement the supervisor cannot be using a firearm at the same time."
That is the way I read it as well. The problem I see, is the area of conjecture, where the police can deem a person "not a fit and proper person" when assessing a persons right to hold a firearms licence. I have heard of someone losing their licence because they lent a firearm to someone, who was going to be shooting with a licence holder, but then they went out on their own and got caught without a licence. The police then revoked the lenders licence because he was not a fit and proper person. If a dad is caught in the maimai with a youngster without a firearms licence, and both are in posession of a firearm, then the dad may lose his firearms licence. It all depends on the individuals.
To be fair, it would be irresponsible to let an untrained individual (young or not), have full control of a firearm. Hell, there are some guys I wouldn't give my TV remote to.

They will have to leave the cop at the gate for all the private ponds will they not? A Fish and Game ranger can let himself in to check the place out, a cop can not............. I would have thought privite ponds would have been the target ? . You would have to be a complete muppet to play up on public water !

Yep I still have that understanding with my son and he is 33. He takes "his"rifle when shooting with his licenced friend but I'm not there. I'm licenced the firearm isn't , don't know how this works but he is always supervised I guess

No problem really with this but it would be good to get them licenced when of age so they can continue tradition within the law

Can the Ranger come onto private property? Without an invite

Yes they can. I'm not sure about the police.

I agree it would be ideal to have only licensed shooters but I see no harm if they are completely competent ( and that's not a call I make lightly) to let them shoot their own gun as well as shooting nearby. These boys have done more shooting by the age of 15 and can handle a firearm better than a heap of adults I have seen. Safety is paramount.
