I've been messing around with flies or very light jigs on spin gear with some success. There are more refined ways of doing it than a bubble float. Tungsten flies are heavy enough to cast with light gear and other flies work well under a slim float. I find it an enjoyable way of fishing. There's heaps of useful gear on AliExpress and our American friends are way ahead of us on this aspect of the sport (see YouTube). If a river (or lake) is open to spinning, I can't see a problem from a F&G standpoint.

These have been my #1 fish catcher of late:

Cast out and draw back so that the nymph rises towards the surface ( just like a real nymph does) then pause to let the nymph sink and then draw in again. Tie the nymph dropper 1.5 mtr above the float

Remember me to your children and grandchildren when no one else but your family are catching fish.
Thanks...I do `t have children maybe will give a try when we settled but I will remember you... will try some casts in lakes around Canterbury, and update you.

Yeah, what I found is light tackles can bring more fun, I use 1.68m rod, UL action, baitcaster reel. It `s light but also strong enough to big fish if do it right.
