Do it Cam, I was dubious to start with too.

The only reason I have bait on my boat now is because a guest has brought it, I only fish softbait now.

A 15kg kingie on 10lb braid is so much more exciting than on a heavy game rod!
Last one took 45 mins to get in and 3 times I could see only a few wraps of line left on my spool!

    Attn Pig Islanders.

I prefer a baitcaster to an egg beater because you can feel a lot more even when dropping the lure down but each to their own.

I been out soft baiting around the ole pig island a few times Cam, main reason was we were not aloud smelly bait on the boat nothing worse than fingers smelling of sardine when yr trying to drink yr latte or smash back yr G&T, gastly heatherns!

Had mixed results. One thing I did get told was if yr soft baiting everyone should be ( not sure why, maybe fish prefer real bait?..)
We where using orange coloured soft baits, I think where called nuclear chicken, as they are ment to look like cray fish legs.
We were dropping baits, down to bottom on bait casters and light gear. Good fun when you do finally hook up.
Some days I recon pig island snapper would eat anything put in front of them.

You do get errrr not sure what to call it... Wankers cramp? from lifting and reeling action after a hour or so. Good endurance training for a fisherman

Whats the difference between a Saltega and a Stella?

No way would I ever consider trying to cast an overhead reel, I have an overhead for jigging.

I thought the whole idea of soft baiting was to cast out and retrieve covering more water? sorta like lure fishing for kahawai at river mouths?

If just dropping it down may as well use bait or a jig?

That's the idea, baitcasters are built for casting, but you have full control and feel even while letting out line while it's descending after your cast.

With my 6'6" rod and curado baitcaster I can cast a 3/8 ounce softbait almost 80m.

Cast in the direction of your drift, let it sink but stay in touch with it an jig it slightly, lift rod tip, take up slack etc until it's back to you, every now and then pull one in reasonably quickly.

I have been fishing with 2 of us softbaiting and 2 baitfishing quite a bit, the baitfishers always battle to keep up!

Saltega is the Daiwa version of the Stella, just a preference, both awesome reels.

I can cast an egg beater like all hell, I cant even swing my bait half a meter away from the boat without bird nesting it with an overhead.

Fishing is expensive enough without me throwing a brand new rod and reel as far from the boat as I can because I birdnested it on the first try.

Yeah, a good baitcaster and your shimano tld are two very different things!

But dont ever buy a cheap baitcaster, the bottom end of the market is absolute shit, if you on a budget a middle if the road spinning setup will be better than an average baitcaster setup.

Yep I will be, you can keep in touch with the lure on the drop by holding the line between your fingers.

    suggestions on a suitable eggbeater?

Go look at some. Daiwa or shimano be good. Stay away from okuma, complete shit even their top end game gear, body etc ok but drags are rubbish
