Good revival of an old thread here....
Looks like TDC are implementing something similar... (note last bullet point - boats under 6m)

This in the latest newsletter from the Motueka power boat club.

Dad popped into the shop today to see about getting some 'rego' stickers made up for his boat as he is a regular user of the motueka power boat ramp.

Shop staff said they have had a constant stream of boaties requesting the same over the last few days !!

Interesting , got stopped southern side of Durville by the Wellington police boat , MPI on board questioned us from the bow , they said all good then another bloke popped up on deck…were your boat name etc …was dump founded never heard of the regulation ( honestly ) then my son points the stern and says all good mate we call it Stabi Craft …

I chuckled , my lad laughed , him on his majesty vessel , frowned at us and spoke words of great importance.

So what they’re saying is, regardless if you have a call sign and a boat name on your boat you still need your trailer rego as well?? What’s next, your telephone no. and date of birth!!!
Councils, they love their signage. At least the ORC states any of the above in their bylaw.

What happens if you park your boat in the ramp compound and don't need a registered trailer (only use it to launch and recover)? I can't see the point to this - I think they've got it arse about face as usually they want the boat name and number on the trailer so if you are missing/overdue they can find the trailer at the ramp easily and confirm you are still out!

Yea it seems like just another thing for the harbourmaster or someone to police for not alot of point?

Only thing I can think of is.....if someone saw someone doing something dodgy they might be able to get the number (from 50m away) and trace them through the trailer rego?

I don't see it being any help at all in a SAR situation!

Is there a standard which needs to be met for such trailers?
I'm thinking about going down that road, as I only tow my boat about five hundred yards to the ramp.

Not as far as I'm aware - as long as it's safe/fit for purpose etc etc. It's the same deal as a beach launching trailer that never leaves the beach, doesn't need lights or brakes or anything required for WoF even to the point of not needing springs or road tyres. If you go onto the road, and tow it with a road legal and WoF/registered road going vehicle you might be a bit of a magnet for trouble if you don't register the trailer - in this case if you use a launching tractor with an Ag rego and have the trailer on the linkage setup so it can't be attached to a road legal vehicle I think you can be exempted from registering the trailer but you are in a grey area. Some places don't care, others get quite anal about it. I recall something about a 30Km/H max speed too, not that that matters much? Probably a bit of research and checking in with the right people in your area so you have the correct info.

It's not entirely unreasonable for boats to have registration numbers, BUT there is almost zero enforcement on the water, it's the wild west, so there is little point on a day-to-day basis. It might be useful retrospectively if someone is breaking MPI or DOC rules or has been involved in a serious incident I suppose. Just like guns, I would wager a lot of those people wouldn't bother registering in the first place.

According to the powerboat club newsletter it kicks in on Dec 1st. You are right though. Piss poorly advertised.

First I heard about it was a couple of days ago from Dad, had to get him to forward me the newsletter to check he hadn't gone mad !

I have spoken to plenty of boaties about it since I found out and hardly any are aware.

Enjoy your exemption while it lasts Cam, might not be long before the NCC and TDC merge into one giant cluster instead of two

Yeah. I'm usually in the Marlborough area (Sounds) but do have a trip over to Collingwood later in summer so best get some stickers.
