The range of what we think and do is limited by what we fail to notice. And because we fail to notice that we fail to notice, there is little we can do to change; until we notice how failing to notice shapes our thoughts and deeds

Spent a few hours fishing the Tongariro in steady rain this arvo. Was quite relaxing with the area to myself.
The river was murky and had a bit of rubbish coming down but I still managed to hook a few.
A nice silver 6lb hen that fought like a demon, into my backing several times before she finally conceded

And then a nice coloured 4lb jack that put on an awesome ariel display in his attempts to rid himself of the hook

    Douglas DFX 6wt
    Orivis hydros III
    SA amplitude infinity fly line.

New for this trip, really impressed with the DFX, great rod, alot stiffer than my 5wt primal. Have a hydros on my 5wt as well and again impressed with these reels.

I am just a hack fly chucked but can feel difference in this set up over my primal raw 5wt rod and suit me better.

Hāwea dam has very low flow at the moment so have been fishing the lake outlet. Just a couple lures to snags so put a nymph on a float and landed a little rainbow hen for breakfast.

The Upper Clutha and Hāwea trout have lovely orange flesh, there must be plenty of koura about to nibble on.

Hoping to give egg rolling a go in the twizel canals over winter. Might try some artificial eggs dangling off a float at either the Wānaka or Hāwea outlets in the meantime.

Saw a number of trout heading up the upper reaches of the Matukituki river on a walk this arvo.

Float fishing is a much neglected technique here in NZ. I want to try it on the canals at some point. I would be interested if you could share your rigs and let us know how you get on.

Ran some eggs down to a weighted nymph 6ish feet long off a float/bobber at the Hāwea outlet again before work and got another nice rainbow.

Just using a cheap telescopic rod with 8 pound mono (6 pound for the leader) but find I’m a bit slow to set the hook and missing quite a few opportunities. Thinking it might be time to upgrade the rod and use some braid to see if I can set the hook more regularly.

Long thin light rods are the way to go for serious float fishing. Hard to track down in NZ, but there are a few options.

    Not a trout but close.
On the way to work today we drove across a small stream and I saw what I thought was a good size trout take off upstream of us. On the way home we stopped for a look and spotted two salmon in a slow moving part of the stream. One of them was tucked right up against the bank so I crept over and lay on the bank, slowly reaching over until I could feel the side of the fish. I moved my hand down to the base of its tail and gently lifted it from the water. The fish was pretty spent (probably having just spawned) so a few photos were taken and it was released back to join it's mate.

Not the way I usually chase salmon but a bit of fun to end the day.
Experience. What you get just after you needed it.

Above the Hawea outlet ie lake side of the dam can be very productive for land locked quniet salmon at certain times of the year.

From memory about now when they build up there trying to do their spawning run.

Also excellant fishing in the Makarora during may (when most other rivers have closed for the season) It is full of fish on their spawning run up from lake Wanaka.
@Haggie Nice fish but it looks more like a brown in that photo

Yea I have heard that they hang out by the intake pipe and have hooked up there. Keen to get into the salmon more but have alot more luck with the trout.

Hmmm hard to see because I had cut its head off already in the picture and its on bit of an angle but had a streak of pink on its cheek and along the body and was quite green on the top. Are hybrids are a thing?
