That would be my choice too, otherwise a rubber band. Maybe time for a Baitrunner?

Got a couple of nice snapper as the light came then ran out of tide..... persevered for half the day for some pannies kahawai and more spiky dogs than I'd like.
Back at the ramp it seems we had done better than most with everyone having a hard time on this side of the bay.

That’s a bloody beautiful fish …..so I’ve looked at the tides for an after work flounder….Wednesday / Thursday …rising tides ..let the hunt begin!

Fishing with a live bait on a egg beater reel with the bail open. Anyone got a better idea than this?

It works ok with a small mackerel bait but didn't work at all with a slightly bigger kahawai liv'ie, the peg just wasn't strong enough to hold the line.

    What do others use, cheers
@stingray I had two mates out for tuna yesterday off the Able tazzy. One fella got none, one fella got 4 both working the 40m area. Sounds like there are less out there than there was a few weeks ago. Also the water temp has dropped a bit. Perhaps that SE last week has pushed them out a bit !! Think we might have another crack on tuesday if the weather is ok !

For live baiting I use a shimano bait runner egg beater and a shimano overhead lever drag, both prefect for staylining and live baiting. Brought these about 17 years ago, still going strong.

That would be $5900 dollars in the bottom off that dingy for a couple hours work which would suit me just fine.
However we have a quota system here in NZ.
A generation back maximum take was set for all valuable species and those that had been commercially catching and had records were basically given "quota"
This has since resulted in a Triopoly?
Where basically 3 companies own pretty much all the fish in NZ.
I'd love to go fishing for myself for a living.....I know I can catch fish but I don't own any quota so it's not economic to do it.
It is also illegal to sell recreationally caught seafood or game.
So I give away most of my catches cos it makes me feel good and fuck the system.

Yeah, I knew the quota system, but even tough I found still lot of fishes were far under catch limits, frost fish for example. if told you a wild catch rock grouper was selling for equal to $650 per kilo in another part of pacific up north, what you think?

I like fishing very much even beyond hunting, but stopped for over 20 years because of busy works. Still trying to grow up my sea legs really do `t like throw up four times or more in one trip. When I was in Auckland I really given a thought of buying a Yamaha jetski the wave runner doulex. But a jetski will not suit southern waters right? Anyway, good catch...keep it up!

Jetski fishing is possible all around NZ.
I have owned several jet skies.
They are great fun but not a great fishing platform.
Yes you can fish from them.
IMHO unless you have a specific use case for the ski get a dingy or boat instead.

Out this morning with a workmate.
    Bit of a fuckup morning.
I woke and got everything ready an hour before I had told him to arrive apparently
    Launching didn't quite go textbook.
Went "deep" to target big snaps....got 2 but the spiky dogs were punishing so bugged out shallower.
Got some pannies, one more good snapper, a Trev some kahawai and a fair few gurnard.
    Started badly but recovered well.
In on the high at lunch.
