Another trip to remember, out at what could be our last easy trip out of Delaware as the courts have decided that council have more sway than the public, using rate payers $$ to ban rate payers from a heritage access beach.. so fuck you Nelson City Council of cunts …

you weak bunch of fuckers who campaigned on supporting our access to get voted in……then fucking stabbed us in the back….

It will be well remembered!! By myself and others you fuckers.

Righto that said and as this is a happy place for yarns and stories …

well VC had a nasty dose of man flue and on the mend was suffering from cabin fever, so called upon me to give the boss ….hay mate how about a half day?

Well as it happened he said ok at 11 am and VC was picking me up at 12….

Out to the “Delaware ramp” , incoming tide launched and away, out to see birds and Kawahai busting up the whole bay…chasing a whitebait sized smelt/ bait fish terns and Petrals everywhere was absolutely epic,

We chose to dive the high tide slack, with a few extra marks on the sounder deciding were to start was problematic, so old faithful to start of course down to the bottom new suit , and lack of bottom time showed.. but with an extra weight in my BCD I dropped in on a sitter…poor bugger was in a tight spot and got himself in a worse spot in me catch sack..worked the turf small crays and bunchs holding tight at the back of holes …nothing out the front.

So moved marks over to another set of turf , down again grabbed another keeper and then spent the next bit of the dive scaring the keepers …”bugger me “ VC you need a better diver!

Diving done and current ebbing in full flood we set a burley and snagged a feed of carrots , Trevs and bugger me a decent snapper ..at time we were surrounded by bait birds and bust ups , no kings just huge Kawahai ..flat arse seas ,hot sun , cold beer and amazing company…

This is nice, Stingray! Nelson area really has everything I need from land to the sea, whatever fishing or hunting can be done in a day trip. Importantly for me, you got an airport with air airlines can easily access to international flights in both Auckland and Christchurch, I only find it out last year. Have you seen any Chinese there? I mean residents, not tourists and I knew for all the Chinese visitors only less than 5% of them have visited Nelson in the past 10 years. So, do you think I can survive in there?

Slow day out of Ohiwa harbor. The bar was a bit lumpy with more wind blowing than forecast but we push out as there's little swell and wind was forecast to drop, which it did.

Plenty of Kahawai around and caught majority of them on a little tungsten flea micro jig. Good fun on lighter 4-7kg rod.

Caught a few snapper, enough just over 32cm and the skipper got one decent one that came home. A good gurnard fell to a slow jig. Boated a small Hammer head shark, loads of mackerel and a 65cm kingfish which took a mackerel head.

Enough fish for a feed and enjoyed giving some to my mum, her neighbors and my sister got in on the act. Smiles all round.

    Cheers FBD

No, just straight out from entrance in 25m then 40m. The farm has been fishing well. Ohiwa charter boat has been doing well out at the farm.

Kayaker have also been doing OK straight off beach in 20m, starting to fire up post spawning.

    Flounder for dinner, very good!

Couple of questions for you experts.

    1. Is it necessary to remove the scales? I did because the internet told me to do it, but hardly seemed worth the effort as there weren't many and the scales were small.

    2. I cut around the head and pulled the guts out with it. Seemed to work. Seen some YouTube videos where people make a straight diagonal cut behind the head which takes the head and the abdominal cavity off in one go. Nice and clean, but possibly a bit of meat wasted. What's the way to go?

Cook them whole if you can.
Don't worry about the scales, as you say there aren't many.
Clean the fish when you catch it to remove sand and slime. Try to avoid using fresh water.
To remove the gut, cut from the anus to behind front fin and pull the gut. You only need to open on one side, some open both to make it easier.
Ensure you get the bile sack out.
Rinse in the ocean to remove the blood, etc, after gutting.
Leave the head on if you can when you cook it, as the cheek meat is very tasty.
This is what I was taught by a couple of knowledgeable forum members.
Seems to work. They cook up tasty as.

I also fillet them at times for the fussy (wife and Daughter)...its also easier to cook four or more fish and have it all ready at the same time as fillets vs whole.
I take two fillets from both sides filleting from the main bone outward. There is very little wastage done right.
