Mental health day!!
Got a crew together, buggered off down to Durville, dropped in on a couple of spots, not alot of excitement so over to spot x.
52cm blues (well one anyway)..the rest went 40cm+ it was just what the doctor ordered.
Moved the boat out into the sand to try for gurnard or snapper.. blake hooks up .. 5mins later we see some colour ... greyboy bout 15lb. A couple more runs but nothing else hooked up.
Dive time headed back to spot x to see why these beauty blues are hanging out in this spot ... had great expectations. Over the side down the anchor line nothing flat arse gravel bottom... swim swim swim hit the rockface a bit of weed a bit of coral... about a million butterfly pearch, a couple of terakihie and some horse sized cod. swim swim swim conger a john dory and that was it..
Buggered if I know why this spot is producing these fantastic cod the turf isn't what you would call ideal cod turf.
Back in the boat and head back up the coast to do a surface interval and have some lunch gut cod etc... hanging a soft bait (just chucked it on a cod hook using a 1/2 oz sinker on top of the hook) over the side mid water. bang.. line being pulled coffee spilt, sandwich dropped, rod grabbed, more line pulled.. lots of excitement...Kawhai about 4lb.
Dropped down a couple of bottom baits and drifted around for another hour with no result. Scallop time right where the GPS.. "you put it in eh no I thought you did" etc (gps sitting safely in the glove box of the truck).. never mind I'll go off me marks .... down up shift down up shift scratch head etc...down up ahhhhhhh (we managed a good feed in the end).
Home clean boat fish scallops and off to hockey and finally a beer.
