@MB , it's a childs mentality which is not saying "I don't like fishing"; rather he is saying "I have more interest in X"; but he feels you may not approve of X and he knows it. X is mikely to be cell phone etc or a friend with one, or a similar attractive diversion. The trick is to identify what that diversion is and discretely remove it or work to femonstrate it has lesser benifit to him than family activities. Maybe find one of his pals whooves fishing and take both.

Upgrade your router to one that you can schedule what devices can access it and when. In our house, the play station only ever had a limited time windows of about 4 hours on a Friday and Saturday night. At all other times it was rendered useless. No arguments or pestering from the kids about access. You just direct them to the schedule on the wall.

On the video games/electronics front, we realised things were getting out of control, so we've limited it to a couple of hours on weekend mornings (mainly so we can get some sleep) and only if we aren't doing something more constructive as a family like boating/fishing.

If only we could give our kids the insight we have now that our parents are gone.
Those times fishing with Dad have become treasured memories and have formed the basis of my passions today.

The old man used to drag me and my brother rock hopping around Whatapu/Cornwallis etc... from when I was about 6. Hopping from 1 rock to another while carrying a 13 foot surfcaster does wonders for both ya ballance and making sure the end of the rod doesn't get snapped off on a rock. It was one of the only fun things we did when I was young and since he was a solo parent we had no choice but to go where he went.

That's pretty much how I spent my own childhood, rock hopping in search of that elusive monster. Usually alone, or with mates from quite a young age. If I had the opportunities my boy has, I'd have thought I died and gone to heaven!

Bad genetics, blame the mother. What she will have to do to make up for this is request that you and your son 'please go and catch some fish for dinner' If there is a purpose in catching fish and the boy has a responsibility to feed the family he will take it on. Look at those young Maori kids, all are into fishing and gathering Kai.

I've known a few, grown up now. If they didn't bring home some food, they got a smack.

    Most young people do

When I was a young whipper snapper me and the brother were always hanging around with the Neighbour kids Eelling and trying to catch small fish in little muddy creek or running through the bush climbing trees and causing mayhem. I guess we were just lucky to grow up in a pretty bushy area on a peninsula within walking distance of the sea and bush reserves etc....
