Thanks for everyone's advice I am impressed so far. First pool I fished, couple of casts and I landed a small rainbow on this:

Didn't get a photo of the fish as it got into a tangle in the net so I didn't want to delay releasing him.

They seem to snag less than spinners I find.

Look forward to trying again, still a lot to learn.

Different country, different species, but I've easily made over 10,000 softbait casts in 2022 and the one thing I really emphasize in my fishing is hook exposure...plenty of hook and hook gap exposed. Take it for what it's worth.

The look of a lure catches the anglers $$$

    The action catches the fish

I have caught plenty of salt and freshwater fish with silicone lures made from silicone RTV in my caulking gun

Can get clear, white, silver and black RTV very easily and makes gosh knows how many lures

I have caught the most saltwater fish on while lures with a silver streak

Freshwater fish have devoured lures with a oily brown colour made by mixing colours together on a clear body

After the main shape sets you can smear other colours in dots and streaks down the side

Back into the hot water cupboard for a day then your ready to go

The smell evaporated/volatilises after a week

Super cheap way to make softbaits

Can even buy alloy/plastic moulds on eBay etc

Jig, by my experience it would `t need too heavy, 3-5g depends on the action of your rod.
I use double uni or albright knots to connect fluorocarbon leader to main line which can be braid or mono. The line size I use thin line like 0.4 to 2 for braid, mono I use #3 - #5

The jig heads are handy with a bottle top folded around the hook shank, 7-10 grams is plenty on 6 pound daiwa Trilene line
