thought I had posted. I used to use a fly rod with a floating line, I had a small fly hook on the end and used bits of pillie for bait, off the wharf at Tauranga's Sulphur point. Best bait for most fish.

When floundering we would get piper on the surface now and then. Smack them with the spear and in the bag. Maybe take some burley or bread crumbs and try it some time
I did see somewhere that someone would put a berley bag in the general area piper are known to be then leave it for a while then drag a net thru
I sure could do with a bait freezer full of piper or any of the small bait fish variety
the do taste nice rolled in flour and fried in butter, very similar to flounder
to be honest I don't fish much anymore ,,, but if I pulled in a little fish with that hideous looking louse as a tongue.... I would scream .... drop the fish..... scream again then shoot the shit out of it , until I had sunk the boat ....

Ive caught tonnes of yellow mackerel with louse in there mouths. They won't hurt ya
Small hook, small bait, 500 mm super light trace, quill float.
They taste like flounder.
Experience. What you get just after you needed it.
