    Shit weather = learning time

Was supposed to be heading off for a surfcast over this weekend but weather conditions fucked that up so the wagon got an oil change and the lawns got mowed. Had nothing better to do after that so started looking around for line joiner knots for attaching shock leaders to mainline instead of the back to back uni, bloodknot joins even though I have been using nothing but mainline, swivel then trace set ups using 10kg mainline. found a few good ones to learn on you tube and then sit down and practise till I could get them right

Albright knot (pretty straight forward and basic would have been good to know this one for fly fishing to attach tippets)

Slim beauty - another straight forward knot which seems pretty strong and looks like it will flow through the eyes of the rod a lot better when casting
    1) tie a double overhand knot in end of leader and pull up till it forms a figure 8
    2) thread mainline through knot in leader (have the knot facing with curve (think of bowl sitting right way up) in knot facing downwards) then moisten the leader knot and pull up tight then pull more mainline through and trim off bit the leader crimped onto
    3) wrap mainline 5-7 times going down the leader and then 4-5 times going back the opposite way and put tag end through loop that was formed below the double over hand knot then moisten and pull up tight and trim tag ends off and you should have a nicely tapered join

The Albright knot is the business for surf casting connections. I go 6kg main to about 30-50lb shock tippet with it and it runs well. Mind you I have a few tapered leaders now and they are even slicker through the guides.

How well does the albright go through the guides without catching and restricting casting distance, picking up my new toy off layby this week which I got at a real sharp price and changing the mono on the reel for the 12 footer and buying different weight mono for the new toy.
