I have shortened a few over the years best way is remove a section of cable and join keeping the joint up at the screen end nice and dry .The older metal mic plugs were ok to replace but the new 10 pin plastic plugs are pretty tricky for joe average to solder properly .

I've done my own home made version of this for the join in the power lead on the sounder (and other bits and bobs) using short sections of garden hose pipe dammed at the bottom, filled over the wire joins with epoxy. Works well.
