I have a little telescopic trout rod and reel that was fairly cheap but really nice to use. It would cast really light lures accurately but had the grunt when needed. It became my go-to setup for snapper and kahawai on the firth. I think the rod is a shimano

I have the combo you looking at! If you want to shoot out to the Waimea and chuck a few whitebait lures about I can drop it off so you can see if it will suit you.

Huge fan of the four piece and rod tube, suits Joe the ham fisted down to the ground.

    PM inbound.

Sounds a bit flash harry , The last time I `fished` for a trout, it was with a handline and a worm for bait. Right hand was holding the handline, left was holding a warm beer in the garden of a lovely English pub, just a wee bit down stream from a Trout farm

I use ML action, M action will be hard to cast light weighted lures like 3g, or fly. fiber glass and carbon rods for me it does `t matter since they all very light, length I use from 1.58m to 2.1m, mostly use 1.68m, easy to carry and considering all the walks along the banks, two rods, gears, lunch, water....was using spin reels but now only use bait caster reels because it can cast out with accuracy, especially in place with high density of trees, or cross winds.. $500, I am sure you will have lots of options, reel will take out much of your budget, but some OEM reels is very cheap if you could find them.
