    Oamaru Hut and Taharua River

    Hey All,

I was wondering if anyone has been up to or around Oamaru hut in the Kaimanawa's last couple of days.

I've never been in and wanting to do a walk to stretch the legs. Plan was to go in via Poronui station

Just wondering what the river levels are like?

    Thanks in advance

I personally wouldn't know the river level situation, but before dropping down to the Taharua River if its in full flood, you could sidle anti clockwise around the river staying in the bush until you hit the Kaipo river and cross there to the Kaipo track as its normally shallow. Would add another hours walk I guess plus your in deer country so could hunt along the way.

Another option is to ring Heli Sika and ask what the river situation is or ask how many cars are in the public carpark which would be indicative that the river levels are ok.

    Full flood… forget it!

I’ve been in there a few times at various water levels including full flood where I just turned around and walked out and walked in over Te Iringa as it’s not worth risking life or limb!

and its not that bad a walk......at the right time of the day there could be opportunities to tip a silly sika over just off the track

Yep, bumped into plenty on the track but most were too fast but one I did shoot was taking refuge under a tree during heavy rain right on the track.

The Taharua enters the Mohaka some distance downstream from the Kaipo. The area between them is Poronui and you probably shouldn't be there.
Yeah the Taharua and the Oamaru meet and its called the confluence and is then known as Mohaka
