    Sailors/builders advice needed

    Hey guys
A mate has a log cabin and was wondering what the best material is to plug the gaps between the logs of log cabin. Is a similar problem to the decking on a ship. Silicon would be the short term solution but i'm surethere is a name for that black sticky stuff between the planks on shipps decking

if you close the gap enough you can use caulking which we use for sealing between the timbers normally under the water line where water expands the timbers and swells it water tight, but i would think it should be fine to pack firm on a log cabin.

They caulk ships with oakum then fill over it with a mixture of pitch and cement called shanam. I thought they used clay for log cabins

These are gaskets put on before the log assembly .
Yes, talk to Graham Mould from Natural log homes in Geraldine, he will be the man for the job.

A cobber (Jack Crooks, a notable boat builder) and I used a mixture of Tar and cement for a quick and dirty (literally) repair to a very old fishing boat that didn't warrant a lot of money spent on recaulking. She's still afloat.
