Where to visit while in New Zealand

Guys, a friend of mine is visiting the Islands. Following a change in her life, she for want of better words has decided to do some travelling for a while. Where should she visit, shes probably gonna just rent a car and drive around, shes easy going, at home in a tent or elsewhere. Thanks in advance for any and all replies, Marty

I believe she plans on visiting both islands. She would more inclined on visiting the real New Zealand, although I don't think she has any ideas even on touristy things.

South Island though it pains me to say so. How much time does your friend have?

How long is she here for as well? Cause the amount of things you see in 2 weeks and the things you can see in 2 months ain't the same.

    South Island

anywhere north of Motueka is awesome, both coast and inland (Cobb Valley)

For tramping / nature etc Kahurangi north of Karamea is very nice. Lots of short walks, and very few people around.

West coast down past Haast (Jackson Bay is worth a look), thru Mt Aspiring park, on to Wanaka.

Fiordland, staying at Hollyford Valley - Guns Camp is a cool experience.

If you want to do a single boat trip - the one across Manapouri to the power station is well worth it, and on to Doubtfull Sound if time allows.

Thanks guys, she has plenty of time, she just told me she is doing a cruise first, then plans to rent a car, a couple of week maybe even a month, she actually has no plans other than the cruise.

Took the road from Taupo through to Rotorua on Tuesday, up on the straights, before Ohaaki, they have removed the forest on the LH side and it open to the hills. Some of the most interesting landscape to look at. Must have been a very violent area when formed.

The Mainland. In no particular order check out Milford, Te Anau, Catlins, Riverton, Haast, Fox, Frans Joseph, Twizel, Hermitage, Punakiki, Maruia, Golden bay, Kaikoura. Whatever else she wants to see.

    Edit:

Here is the sort of things most like to tick off.

There are only three types of people in this world. Those that can count, and those that can't!
