@stug - What projectiles were you using in the 7mm mag versus the SAUM? Bergers vs AMAX wasn't it? Surely a 200-250 fps wouldn't make that much of a difference?

I used both in the 7mm mag, both dropped them on the spot consistently. I had a few run but not many. Most shots were high shoulder shots.
I use the a-max with the 7saum and have killed animals, but all have run a little way, except a red yearling. I haven't done as many high shoulder shots to be fair.
Southland/Otago hunting mainly, some in Canty, over last four years - since I bought my first rangefinder (although not EVERY shot animal had been recorded) Average range on Red deer 182 metres. Chamois 144 metres. Tahr 266 metres.
I'm drawn to the mountains and the bush, it's where life is clear, where the world makes the most sense.
I bush hunt 99 pcent of the time, mostly with a 243 but have a 308 but its only shot one stag at 8 yards(plus about 15 goats) The last 6 deer ive shot with the 243 have been(est)
70 yards
25yards
50 yards
80 yards
100 yards
10yards
Great question !
Not just stags but 12 deer in the last 10 months in Canterbury and average is 302m and that was brought down by a couple of very close easy ones.
If you don't load the 7mm mag would be the best, but to do well at longer ranges you need to reload.
I don't keep a record of distance but I know my average distance is well under 100m, closer to 50m. South Island - West coast.
Actually is we are just talking Red stags then the average would be close to 20m.
Mine are abit varied but my average for north island private land hunting would be around 150 yards as most of the longer shots I could have stalked in closer if I wasn't so lazy
I need to keep a notebook too! Average for last 10 deer in north island is 226yards but that was brought up a wee bit by my recent stag (443yards).
Edit that's mostly tops/semi open country with only two of those in the bush. All but two were with my .223

All depends on where I decide to hunt on any given day.
Some of the closest shots are from walking into some of my long range spots.
Depends on where I am hunting.
Location 1: Average <40m
Location 2: Average 100-150m
Location 3: Average >300m
All are in the North Island.
