Thread: Black powder - youse bastards coulda warned me!

Too long ago I re-caught the BP bug of @akaroa1 - only was 2-3 years ago I scored a Gracia New Zealand made percussion rifle in 45.

Finally go round to shooting it today, it's a crappy sort of drizzle with lots of wind so since SWMBO was out I shot off the deck. That went well.

Then I thought I'd better clean it. Missus still away. Kitchen sink is within arms length of the deck so the barrel went straight into hot water. It had been close to 35 years since I cleaned a fouled BP rifle. Oops. I had a very thorough clean up after putting the rifle away . . . . But our bench top is a sort of white imitation marble with a blackish streak through it.

She is just home and OMG for a very calm and normally placid person . . . I TELL YA, it is the last time I clean a BP rifle in her kitchen!

Oh dear, Tentman. At least you weren’t reconditioning the motor of an old Zephyr on the couch.

Hey thanks for that Rushy, that and reminding her about Saltbush who cut a sheep down in the lounge (his own, not ours) with a chainsaw at a 3.00 am post party function is sure to get me off the hook . . .,.

My God! I would have thought you old enough not to make that mistake. Ill consider my odds of survival even boiling out a head on the stove.

And anyway we don't care about any of that we just want to see / know how it shot ?

It shot fine, 70gn with the 280s at 1350 fps 40mm at 50M

Better to take the barrel with you when you have a shower - hot , running water and easy to clean up after.

Pleased it works well anyway... ;-)

Correct me if I'm wrong @Tentman you have a wash tub in the same building as your man cave ?

My late uncle scalded a pig in the inside house bath!!!! And lived to tell the tale.

My black powder experience. Had a .45 hawken got a bit of rust during a trip down to the south island to a motorbike rally. Once I got home. I stripped it down and had the barrel in the vice at a slight angle to hold the oil in. While I was away chasing the new significant other woman, disaster happened. The ex in her deranged state, obviously missing me used the woodwork for firewood including the brass work. Well that was grounds for divorce. Do you know how much that can cost? Tell you what, it put me off black powder

yes had a mate in Gisborne Chinese family his mother used to ,pluck the chooks in the kitchen sink and gut them there as well - much to the horror of the children
