does the exterior finish quality affect the rate the they consume $$? I thought they were all like that..

Mine has been chopped down alot , and it seems to be ok .

your the lucky one @ChrisF I can think of 3 that shot well before the cut and now shoot shit quite a few of my mates have them personally I like a bit more quality so id never have one myself
but they are good enough for a cheep bang up gun for farm work and pest control just like the ak47 rough tough reliable and pretty much un-killable

You can get replacement mags for almost everything from a company in eastern Europe. I'll see if I can find the website.

Yep, the Toz 17 is a great little knockabout rifle and one of my more accurate .22 rifles ( I have 15). Believe they were made as a training rifle for Russian soldiers, hence the no frills look. The stock looks like it was hacked out of a piece of drift wood by a one eyed crone on drugs using a blunt axe, but can they shoot!

I paid $39.00 new ,have they gone up since then.

Shit you've made money, $200 I think one was a fairly old rifle both in good nick,

ive picked up a couple over the years for around $50 and yes they did have mags and in good nick they got on sold pretty quickly though as I hate push to cocks

From memory the end of the barrel had a big chunk of metal on it, perhaps lopping this off was the cause of some peoples loss of accuracy? Also I believe the usual stock finish was shellac, some seemed to be worse than others.

Toz are great rifles. Mines a 17-01 still with "Made in Soviet Union" stamping on it. I will never ever sell it. Paid bugger all for it, but paid $110 for an extra magazine!
It loved the old Magtech 40grain subs. Still got a few bricks of them saved for a rainy day.

I have a new 78/06 and it likes the same ammo. (I should say liked as I am long since out of it and cannot get more...)

Tim - is the 78/06 the heavy barrel version. That's a rifle I'd like.

Mind you - range tested the standard Toz model 78 a while back and its an ideal bolt action 22 for NZ conditions.
