CZ doesn't shoot as well as I'd hoped

    Hi all,

I have a CZ 452 17hmr which I've had for over a year now. It groups really well at 50m, 5 shots under .5", but out too 100m on a windless day it can group under an inch but I will quite often get a flyer or two which will be way off. I've added a picture that shows the barrel not free floating.

It looks like if I try to move the barrel into the centre of the stock it looks like the whole barrelled action moves.
I really don't want to do a huge amount of modification to the stock, as it has an excellent wood grain and I don't want to cock it up.

Is my best bet to try glass bed the action in such a way that the barrel gets put into the centre of the barrel channel, or is it more likely the action screw holes aren't in the centre line and I'll have to do something with them too?

I'd start with just easing that barrel channel out a bit. Use a wooden dowel of a similar diameter to your barrel, with sand paper wrapped around it. When you're happy with the clearance, seal it with clear polyurethane.

10MRT shooters do it 60 times, in two directions and at two speeds.

I sanded my barrel channel out a bit, also set the action screws surprisingly loose, and it halved the group size in my .22lr 452. I think I'm under an inch at 100 with the right ammo now. (Mine also sat rightwards in the channel, exactly like yours.)

Is it touching. Tried running a $10.00 note up it to see if its touching whilst assembled?
If it is maybe some wood work required to create some clearance?

My 455 had a similar problem from the factory, which was a huge let-down after having paid so much for it... Regardless, they are capable of fantastic accuracy when free-floated and bedded. Like ishoot said, open up the barrel channel with some sandpaper on a dowel and if the accuracy doesn't improve then start researching glass bedding.

I used a rem 504T LSHB in 17 hmr and the best accuracy was found using straight ammo, (as well as the usual free float/bedding sort out) put each round on a concentricity gauge and use the out of round ammo for close range shooting.

Longest rabbit kill was 338 yrds at a matapiro vineyard years ago.

Any idea of what polyurethane/oil I could use that will match the current finish? It's a walnut American. Perhaps I shall lossen off the action screws and see what happens.

I think I can fit some paper down the channel but its tight, it is definitely touching all the way down.

I'd like to try any non destructive methods as to not ruin anything, but if I need to I will bed it/sand out the channel.

get a piece of dowel same diameter of the barrel wrap the sandpaper round that. We are talking 400grit or NOT 80grit (240grit and the roughest). This will give you an even surface between paper and wood.
You will be taking so little off no one will notice if you only use a clear polyurethane in the channel.

I've bought an Anshultz 17 hmr and the barrel is way off centre to the stock, can't complain about the accuracy, I'll send it to Toby for correction, once he's done a few more stocks
