When I was 16 I brought a 12 gauge hammer gun. One of dads mates said put the butt against your thigh and fire it first to see if it's safe.
I let rip with both barrels and have never forgotten it.

Teaching or learning good technique is important.

When my son started target shooting I had him start with a 223 so he didn't develop a flinch.
(He was a skinny 14 year old.)
After a season with the 223 he progressed to a 308 and has never looked back.

We've introduced a number of people to shooting on the range over the last couple of years.
Teaching them how to properly hold and aim the rifle distracts them from thinking about the recoil.
They typically leave with a big smile and are now supporters of shooting sports/disciplines.

lol I went hunting with my stepfather when I was 14 and he gave me a shot with a 12G side by side. Of course he never said how to stand or to pull it in hard against my shoulder, so standing with my feet spread I pointed the gun out the front and pulled both triggers. Went flat on my back and had a bruise on my shoulder for 6 weeks. Put me off shotguns for decades.

its one thing subsonic rounds and a suppressor are AWESOME for...recoil shy people....no noise = no scaredycat flinch...couple of subs then mild few supers then full noise job.....

I once had a 7.62 cook off in my face as i was changing belts on a mag58. Total pants shitting moment that was. I was 18 and thinking "ok thats it im now blind". As luck would have it i just got atomised brass in my face, and half the cartridge went down the barrel with the bullet.
Swapped barrels, belt on, 'build a bridge mate'. The army was a loony place sometimes.

got face full of hot grit...bolt was stuck fast...got home and had to hammer it open with rubber mallet and poke old steel cleaning rod down barrel and hit it with 20oz hammer to back bolt out ...case is permanently stuck in end of bolt...action is poked... bolt lug that has extractor claw in/on it expanded and broke around claw... rifle is toast....still have perfectly good barrel.2x stocks and mag, bottom plate etc......could maybe buy another action and rebuild but have replaced with new HOWA.
the strenght and design of action saved me from serious injury...I was wearing sunnies, dont normally, that poosibly saved my eyesight.
