The new Marlin 45-70 splatter looks wicked
I had a Marlin 30/30 336w , nice rifle. I sold it as I needed more range and for some reason I really struggled to get to grips with the cross hammer / bolt thing... just did my head in.
I had a hammer spur and it was an excellent addition .
look forward to seeing some animals on the deck with it Danny.
so I picked up my Marlin late last night and mounted the scope and rail, I levelled the scope and torqued it up this morning then took it to the range to zero it.
Well I've never had it so easy.... first shot with no adjustments I obliterated a coke can and thought maybe just a fluke, so I set up a paint tin and aimed for dead center and let off a second round.....nope no fluke, I've never had it so easy especially as it's not like I could bore site it.
On another note I bought some 170gn Winchester silver tips and the guy I bought them off threw in some unknown hand loads that I assume are 150gn of some sort by the writing on the box but no idea what projectile they actually are.
I wouldn't normally fire someone else's hand loads but the guy I bought them off assured me they were safe so they are the only 2 rounds I have put through it.
Can anyone identify what projectile they are ?
I spoke to a mate who suggested Winchester 150gn silvertips but none of the pics I found look like these and they also have a different primer to the 170gn silver tips.
will try the 170gns at some stage but didn't have time this morning

Mine is an 1984 336TS, setup with Sig Romeo red dot on an XS scout rail, and XS ghost ring and front site post.
170gr Sierra Flat points loaded with ADI 2206H.
My 336 Marlin as the first "right " rifle for me, I`m left handed and had been using a right hand P/ H .308 bolt action for a bit so when I saw them at Reloaders for $400 I grabbed one. It was blued and I had to pull it apart to polish all the inside working bits to stop it from chewing the cartridges to bits lots of machine marks and also honed the trigger sear down from a 5lb pull to 3lb one much better. The little 3030 is a great bush gun , I fitted a Weaver 1-3 x40 scope on it and call mine " Sudden death " as the grey ghost`s on Steward Island found out. The blueing wears off quickly so I " hard coated" it on the outside only, EG, Nickel plate, .004" then hard chrome .002" deposit, looks like S/Steel and no rusting problems. I load with 3130 29.5 gr 150/170/and the plastic tipped ones.
@308mate the fancy leather pants arrived today
Really suits the rifle perfectly and the guy who made it is happy to customize anything you want ie: check riser, fancy stitching, wider shoulder strap etc etc the possibilities go on and on.
If anyone is interested I can put you in touch with the guy that made this.

Mate that looks beautiful! Well done.
What did it set you back?
Well popped in to the team at gunworks this morning to drop a rifle off for shipping and whilst there I grabbed a couple boxes of ammo to try in the 30-30, Hornandy leverrevoloution 160gn and Hornandy 150gn whitetails,
Now @Calikiwi did warn me it wouldn't shoot the leverrevoloution very well and he was right it sprayed them all over the place like a shotty.
It did however love the Hornandy whitetail 150gn and shot the under an inch at 100 yards .84" to be exact.
I'm told any lever gun that shoots under the mythical inch is a but of a unicorn so I'm well pleased with that.
Sighted in at 3" high at 100 yards should see me bully or close enough at 200yards bloody happy with that.

the round shown is an old school silvertip....they came in 150grn for the .308.
marlins like shorter rounds than winchesters...projectiles come with crimp groove/cannalure at different places for this reason.
dont waste those silvertips, you wont and I mean WONT find a better killing round, they expand very very well....in .308 they tended to blow up if driven too hard,in the 30/30 they were perfect....the new deerseason projectiles are a flash new way of trying to achieve what the silvertips did so well....dump energy in a hurry inside a deer.
