    My new toy: a .500 S&W

So the other day I spied this TC in .500 S&W on trademe. I'd been reading @rossi.45 's thread with interest and was keen to have a go with a big bore subsonic bush rifle. It has a 15 inch barrel and comes with brass, dies, projectiles and bullet moulds

The plan is to have a heavy subsonic load for general use (possibly 700gr if I can cope with the recoil) and a lighter supersonic load for if is see something a little further away.

I am completely new to casting bullets and subsonic reloading, so will be greatful for any advice.

    Questions:

What scope should I put on it? ( I had been thinking about @gimp 's VX6 1-6 but I was too slow and wanted some advice first).

What suppressor should I put on it? ie who makes the best one for subs?

I talked to gunworks and they could/would make a custom one.

I talked to @DPT they don't make them that big and didn't seem keen to do anything custom.

    Intergrated muzzel break ?
    Why 700g ?
Pretty sure anything fired from that will make 2 pretty big holes !
He nui to ngaromanga, he iti to putanga.

You depart with mighty boasts, but you come back having done little.
Sounds like a typical hunting trip !

Do some research first I don't think the standard twist will handle 700 grain projectiles at subsonic velocities, I sell a 500 grain cast if you are interested, check TM I will list it.

Re Scope, Red dot or 1-4 #4 retical.
Whats long range for this sort of setup. 100 mtr, 150 mtr. the 4x may be a bit much. How about a nice lite fixed 2 or 2.5x scope.
You may have to give Hardy a call. Given the different style of silencer inside they may be able to help you out. Of course the larger the hole the less effective they are.

That does look like fun, like the stock. Could a good pack rifle for those longer bush trips. Give them pigs some medicine as well.

essentially because if velocity is the limited factor in shooting subsonic I figured I might as well have as big a projectile as possible - full power loads with a 700gr projectile are only going at 1200 fps

Yeah, I haven't called hardys yet. I got a hardy suppressor on my .243 a while back and Ian was awesome to deal with. Might have to give them a call.

This scope could be alright depending on what it goes for?????

well done @Rich007 . . . very pleased to see a forum member has it . . and also started a thread.

being new to casting you are going to need bucket loads of patience and determination to hang in there for the long haul if you are going to succeed . . but with the right attitude and a willingness keep spending time & money you will have a bunch of fun.

read as much as you can from these guys and others on the www

    Dam a S & B for under $1k. (with 2 hours to go)
Probably over kill for that rifle?
But I would swap my 1-4x20 Nikon for it any day.

My first thought when I saw the heading for this thread was What a waste of time.
After seeing it I want one.
I would mount a red dot or a 1-4 on it if it was mine.
Might pay to get some good ear plugs.

if gunworks are willing to do custom jobbie for it....give them a chance to do so. as for scope.....maybe something like a pig plex 1-5 loopy????
shooternz makes AWESOME projectiles......by the time you have shot a hundred or so of them you will not be bothered casting your own,his prices are more than fair and they sure do the bizo at terminal end of things.
