One day one went to 120psi but it was a cheapie brand and it let go as I pumped it up. Nearly lost my thumb, frag wounds to left hand, heaps of stitches. The valve lodged itself in the shed roof.

Luckily I lived 200m from the medical centre in town so I wrapped my left hand in a teatowel and walked down. The did a good job with my thumb and dosed me up on pain killers. From there I had to get to school for my chemistry exam which went ok until about 45 minutes to go and the local wore off well and truly. Mammoth effort to keep my shit together for that exam but got through it.

Had a phobia of compressed air cylinders for about 20 years after that...

I can still visualise the dent in the roof. I think the old man ripped us a new one after that. Stories of peeling a kid off a garage wall in the 70s after he tamped down some home made gunpowder too hard and the rod impaled him. Etc.

Surprised we made it through our teens really.
