The farm needs a drainage ditch to the creek to dry the bottom paddocks, easy to justify making a 500 yrd ditch 3m deep and 3.5 m wide
How wide was James head ?

A roof on the ditch or James head ?
As for the ditch, No, as then i would have to fence it off.
Could do 200m of roof if it was needed, but i prefer not to.

You may need a custom blade on your dozer or just not let the bogan walk the length of it
Do what ya want! Ya will anyway.
With mates like you James doesn't need enemies

Would it not need to be fully enclosed to be effective?
Assuming the goal is a range un affected by air movement.

Just plant the edges in flax or some such but leave the targets with a clear sky so there are visible. Will stop alot of wind, look good to the council and you might get a few birdys round...
Planting the sides of the trench would break up the wind considerably, its actually better than a wall where the wind would eddy over and into the trench.
If it ends up being near a major stream/wetland you could even try getting some funding from Regional Council as you would be enhancing their waterways and/or creating a green corridor.
Seriously though, if you get to the stage of building the thing, flick me a PM if you want some guidance regarding plant species, spacings, etc, I think I can help you out there.
Hunting is not a hobby.....its an addiction
