As mentioned above, Awakeri Shooting Federation is a good spot (I'm a member) and open to visitors on Sunday mornings. Best to come mid morning - pending the week there may be a "Comp" on so you may have to wait for that to wind up if you want to hit the big range (there's 13 or so, other, short ranges though).
$10 for a visitor, stay for a few hours and give the shoulder a good work out
Plenty of good old boys there for a yarn, they may even let you have a play with some of their toys

Yes, and for another important reason.
Some time ago a couple of us keen North Islanders were invited south to night shoot Rabbits / Hares, spotlighting and shotguns only, firing from the deck of a landcruiser. Well, we just took our duckshooting ammo, all steel. Was all good until our shots were hitting stones and gravel, making sparks fly ! The poor farmer had to get stern with us. There was real danger of getting a fire started there. Jeez, did we feel stupid. Farmer was 100% correct of course. Lucky the other boys brought enough lead ammo, helping us and the fun continue.
