What Mr Duck mentioned about tapping the dials/ turret after adjustment is simply a personal thing that was and still is done by many. Help the adjustment settle type of thing... whether it was needed or not was like I said,,a personal touch.. Regardless of what make of scope, expensive job or not it happens.

45 yrs ago that applied as the scope mechanisms that we had were pretty agriculture and was common practice.
I would be pretty disappointed if I had to do any tapping or going past the adjustment point and back.
My regime is bore sight 25m then while holding the rifle still dial from the bullet hole to aimpoint.
    Repeat at 100.
Fine tune with a couple of rounds and good to go.
Ideal if two people involved but works a treat.
Ffp scopes are great for that to, measure and go!

Use the same method to sight scope, you can soon see if they ae dailing.

With scopes you get what you pay for and ability to dial is usually the first to suffer.
I have scopes that are a bitch to zero and once zeroed I don’t touch the them unless they loss zero. 5 clicks down Moa, can mean inch/half down & half inch left and so you round in circles.
I was told that if a bolt is trying to push on, a round tube relying on spring tensions to hold adjustment , all sorts creep goes on, if your alignment is out it all gets worse. So tapping this arrangement will settle it all into position, hopefully the position that is you zero, successive shots can move all that, depends on the springs & threads quality and amount of use. This sort of scope don’t adjust, holdovers and Kentucky windage works are the best.
If I find a scope that dials and holds zero, it’s a keeper.
Having said that all my scopes I consider that dial well , do elevation well, but not so well on windage and so windage marks are important, apart from that I would probably dial the wrong bloody way, it’s enough for my tiny brain to deal with bullet drop.

A lot of impressionable people new to shooting will read advice in this thread.
It’s only fair they see balance with some of the redundant generational beliefs out there.
In short, you get what you pay for in regards to optics.

Ha ha..I didn't think for one minute I'd be encouraging the young bucks to get out and buy an expensive scope.. mount it up then thump the crap out of it . Like I said it's personal..my scopes, the 2 of them aren't cheap but they still get the now redundant tap lol.

I always go a few click past a correction point then back. I prefer b&c type reticles. Zero at 300m on second bar down then check using crosshair at 200 and 100. Don't change dials after that for hunting.

In the situation where a scope hasn't been adjusted in years it can get sticky and benefit from a wind up and down and tapping even, then presto ! it starts working fine again. I had this last year with a good scope, couldnt zero until I clamped it and checked what was happening - and that was a scope that would be considered good quality - 3-12x56 FFP Kahles. It had held perfect zero for twenty years and not needed changed
