Hello from the Mile High Colorado, USA

    Hello everyone,

I have been browsing your website for a few days and just wanted to introduce myself. I live in Colorado, USA and like to hunt and long range shoot. I found your website as I have a Tikka T3 in 7mm and it seems that many folks in NZ use the Tikka firearm for hunting. I also shoot Remington 700 in 308, and 223 and have a variety of military surplus that I shoot(7x57, 8x47, 54r).

I am getting very excited for this years hunt. I hunt Pronghorn Antelope on the plains, Mule Deer and Elk in the mountains.

I have never been to NZ, but only as close as Sydney and Perth Australia with the Navy. I do wish to travel there some day for a Boar hunt and see the country.

    Thanks

    Thanks for the replies.
I live in Firestone, it is a small town between Denver and Ft Collins. It is on the East side of the foothills / Boulder.

I have tags for all three animals and will hunt next month for deer and antelope. Elk in November

Antelope are very quick, so it is a lot of glassing and driving until you see them way out and then try to stalk them. They have very big eyes and a keen sense of smell, so good stalking and/ or long range shooting is a must. I hunt them out in South East Colorado around Limon and Kit Carson. Antelope are also known as "speed goats" out in CO and Wyoming. Most folks use 243, 7mm mag, 7mm-08, 25-06 and other flat shooting cal's. They are not hard to harvest, just have to get close enough to place a shot.

There are also white tail deer and Mule deer in the plains, but I prefer to get into the mountains.

I hunt deer and elk up around 9000 or so feet, and walk in about 5 miles if I can. By the time I get back there, sometimes I hope I dont see anyting because it will be a long pack back to my vehicle, lol.

I will take plenty of picks this year and post them as I can

Here are my hunting rifles for this year

    For Antelope and deer:

Tikka T3 7mm mag with Vortex

    Mauser scout sporter in 7x57

    Long range / backup

Remington 700 Tactical and SPS, they are both 308W, the one on the left has a RWS brake for my daughter to use.

and my Elk rifle Remington 700 bdl in a CDL stock, 30-06

Thanks, I live in Firestone, CO . It is North of Denver south of FT Collins.

I have tags for all three animals. I will hunt Antelope with my daughters early OCT, Deer alone (back pack hunt) late OCT, and Elk with my son (back pack) in Nov.

I made another post with some pics of my rifles, but it is waiting moderator approval.

Welcome Roggom, enjoy your time here. I have been on the side if the Rockies above Denver and couldn't bloodywell breath due to the rarified air (flew in and out in 2 days so no time to acclimatise). If you came to where I live (less than 10 metres above sea level) you would probably have the same problem in reverse and have to use a spoon to take a breath because the air would be so thick for you. Mind you you could also run and jump twice as fast / high as you normally do. Lastly Sydney is no where near New Zealand it is 35,000 kilometres away (if you take the eastern route).
It takes 43 muscle's to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger pull.
What more do we need? If we are above ground and breathing the rest is up to us!

Rushy, I like the way your think . Yes the air is thin out here, and the weather is crazy. Can be warm enough to wear shorts in Nov and then knee deep in snow the next day. The following day the snow melts and back to shorts. The thin air is a plus when you want to send a bullet out a ways though.

Hey roggom, welcome mate! Are you in the Navy? You'd know what it's like to train at high altitude then smoke a BFT down on the flats then

Welcome along bud! Can't wait to read some of your hunting stories!
