You could buy a PLB in the UK and take it back home with you at the end of your trip. Always useful to have. You don't have to be deep in the bush for it to save your life, just out of mobile reception. A UK bought and registered PLB will 100% work in NZ. Don't listen to anyone saying otherwise.

Yeah I was hoping to do a long trek in one of the larger ranges, camp out or use huts maybe 14 days is ambitious. Its likely I will just stick to the north island, unless its relatively cheap/simple to get to the south island.

Buy a ferry tiket, drive on the ferry, go to the bar for 3 hours, drive off ferry. In the South Island. You don't even need a passport or visa.

Get a decent rifle that'll do the bigger animals and you'll be 'sweet'

Thanks for all the input guys, as you can imagine I have a lot of planning to get done. Still cant decide what species to concentrate on and whether or not I should have a go at Tahr/Chamois on the South Island. Basically I am after a difficult long hunt that will test my skills, so species doesnt really matter as long as I need to put in the work. Maybe you have recommendations?

Calibre wise was probably going to go with .300 win mag just to make sure I have enough power for most species.

Do you know anybody in the UK who has already been here that you can talk to, to help make up your mind?

As has already been mentioned, the weather can turn on a dime here, so I suggest you factor in some time for unforseen circumstances.
