Welcome John
I'm 70 and built like a land rover. Keep breaking down.
Welcome, I'm 45 and a fat bastard. I only started hunting and shooting 2 years ago. I spend all day sat in front of a computer. After 2 years of armed tramping I can now walk about 25km off road with a pack and rifle before my feet and legs start to complain. I still struggle with the climbing and up hill aspects though. Don't worry, there are still plenty of animals near sea level so just get out there, find a good couple of DoC land spots and start walking. do some reasearch on weather, safety gear and wet weather gear though. and get a beacon!

What more do we need? If we are above ground and breathing the rest is up to us!

Welcome John
Now now gentlemen you will have Jono thinking he has moved to a country populated by incontinent old farts.
Greetings Jono. Some advice from a Government Certified and increasingly feeble old codger. Get on the DoC site on the inter-web and find yourself a spot where you can hunt that is in range from where you live. Go there as often as you can. Spend plenty of time sitting, glassing and watching. Go a little further each time. Change the area only if it is obvious it is a dud after a few trips. A visit to your local NZDA Branch could be a good idea. Just be aware that they can be a stand offish bunch at least at first.
Best of luck. Grandpamac.
Hi John.........what loads and guns to you use to hunt...........why you want to post in NZ?
Welcome Jonno, from another saffer on his way to live and hunt in the land of the long white cloud, as soon as COVID pisses off
Hi Jonno
Dunno if you've been out yet but the bush here is not like home.
Navigation and not getting lost is huge part of hunting, basically because the bush is so dense you lose all reference points.
Maps, compasses, all those things you used 100 years ago? Yeah, well, you need them here,
GPS / NZTopo50 app on your phone also good.
I did a HUNTS course. In terms of getting your thinking right about how to hunt here, it will save you years of stumbling around learning things the hard way.
Also gets you in with the NZDA crew which is not a bad thing.
