I also never worried about hearing protection and my ears started ringing as early as i can remember and have been ringing everyday since. I never gave it much thought just assumed it was normal as its all i knew until i went in for a job and had my medical and was told i had very strange hearing loss in my ears where only one could be explained by firearms. The other I think may have had to do with a shotgun I had that blew up and peeled back like a banana peel felt like i got fuc%$#ng concussed.

Some tinnitus can be cured, some can be reduced, but sadly for some there is no cure. Mine was the worst but luckily for me, curable.

Had 55 plus years of hunting and machinery, 30 years ago ACC excepted it as industrial deafness, have been back every 10 years for a review. Last year was sent to a different specialist and got told, " it's not industrial hearing loss, it's hereditary or result of concussion" will now only pay for 17% of hearing costs. Always use a suppressor or good muffs but the "ringing" doesn't go away and hearing aids are useless BUT I love GPS tracking collars, have made life bearable out there with my dogs.
