    Butchering Guides

    Hi guys,

Are there any butchering guides that would be helpful to a beginner?
I have seen a few books - I am lookng at getting this one: The Complete Book of Butchering, Smoking, Curing, and Sausages Book Shop Online for Books - Gumboot.co.nz but I am leaning towards maybe some YouTube videos.

    Any ideas?

are you looking for info on how to break down a carcass, or info on processing small goods, or both ?

the dvd "the how to of deer hunting in nz" by Alex Gale also has some good sections on boning out and cutting up into the main "cuts" ala butcher style.

    Thanks for the info.
I am after all the help I can get. I have looked at the Darran Meates book (what a brilliant last name!).
I will add that to my wee list

I am setting up my man-cave, and want to do it once and the right way.

I did a bit of a search a while back for a 'course' Kumoe, best I could find was a gazillion dollars for a hunting guide. Just get out there with some good blokes from the forum and let a few different people show you how they do it. Then get stuck it.

VC got me onto that one Chris, like Dougie said have a cuppla mates butchering and the hands on approach is the best, Neckshot and I did some reds with a local butcher and its not untill you have hands on the knife and questions while in the process you learn.

I have done 3 now no expert but its a great way to learn.

I think most guys initially maybe a bit worried they gonna do it wrong but hey can always mince the mistakes n make BBQ patties.
A butcher friend told me years ago the lines to cut up an animal are already on them.Have a look next time you have one hanging up.
Also helps I've been working as a meat processor for 5 years before moving to the packing room.

I'm self taught, it's not too hard with a bit of diligent research every step of the way. Start small with chickens and large cuts and work your way up from there.

Sadly, I have to agree with you about not buying, as I bought his "The Farmers Guide to Butchery" and found it so lacking in detail as to be quite inadequate.
