You can add a packet of Maggi seafood soup mix to the batter for some extra flavor, dip in the mussels ,cook and eat, yum.

Closer to Grey, would 9 mile. Just over the river on main road (strongman mine access road on right), park up. Beach, go south to the rocks.
The mussels were great when no1 was in operation, went a bit crap when no2 was open, unsure now. BUT I think they would be all good.
Many a time on that beach with a fire going and a section on corogated roof iron on it to cook them (the irons great as it stops them falling off - just let it heat up and burn off paint and some of the galv first....)
Please excuse spelling, as finger speed is sometimes behind brain spped........ Or maybe the other wayy.....
My mums cousin had a bach at woodpeckers. My uncle had one next door but got out in the early 70's.
Had a couple of good feeds of musseld from out there when I went out.
A good friend of mine lives pretty much there now.
even better is mussels cooked on a well seasoned breastfed MOW shovel blade-got to be the realdeal not one of these DIYstore chinese imports.
speaking of which if ya were a guts a good feed could be had off a coalminers banjo shovel gently heating over a driftwood fire. the old 4gla kero tim was always a handy one to have two if you had a few with hefty appetites eyein up the seas bounty!
BTW was it 9 or 12mile that were also rumoured to be pretty flush with easy picking crays in those days.??
cheers ,had a funny feeling it was 12mile .incidentally was talking to a bloke I havent seen for 25+yrs just recently and we had a good old yarn about those days and the abundant free tucker.
also used to be good mussels out in front of the old greyhound pub at arahura although IIRC you needed permission form the local maori which generally wasnt a problem if you minded your P&Qs and didnt abuse the privelege.those buggers were particularly tasty marinated with onions in ye old malt vinegar-it used to be a mate of mines party piece -never bought a jar ,always a tub of his special mussels!
