I thought the .303 uses .312/13" dia bullets and the 7.62 uses .308" dia bullets?. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
7.62x39mm is in between at .311 so you can get away with either...ruger made some rifles with .308 barrels I use both size projectiles in mine ...its a 150 yard cartridge so you dont need pin point accuracy to kill deer 2-3" at hundy is fine n dandy.
bakail single shot break open suits a leftie just fine n dandy......
It is about how you measure the calibre.
Americans measure groove-to-groove, because... it gives the greater, more impressive figure. Brits and Russians are secure enough in their manhood to measure land-to-land. (-:
The .303"/7.7mm is named for the land-to-land barrel diameter, but fires .312"/7.92mm bullets, which is the groove-to-groove diameter (some grooves deeper than others)
The .308 Win/7.82mm named for its barrel groove diameter, and bullet diameter 7.8mm, but the land-to-land diameter is nearer .30"/7.62mm.
Into which comes the 7.62x54R Russian, the 7.62x25 Tokarev and the 7.62x39 Soviet,
all done on similar tooling, with same rifle twist rate, .312"/7.92mm bullets, .30"/7.62mm land-to-land diameter and .312/7.92groove-groove diameter.
Explains why Lee Enfield .303s can be successfully chamber reamed to run 7.62x54R or have their chambers set back to run 7.62x39.
An itch ... is ... a desire to scratch
I have the .223/5.56 version and find it to be well made and accurate.
I had the howa but as I use mine for service rifle shooting I was finding the mags and the lite barrel a bit of a weak point.
For general hunting I would say either the howa or ruger in 7.62x39 would be a good bush rifle.
