NOW FEEL FREE to correct me if Im wrong....but wouldnt you be better off to install the rear sight as far back as possible??? so your already long sight radius is longer still...meaning your aiming will be more precise and any adjustment/drifting sideways of either component make a smaller difference....
    really enjoying watching this build.

Well @Micky Duck I would shift it a lot further back if it was a peep or tang staff sight.
But its a primitive / traditional long rifle sight so it needs to be out on the barrel a wee way
Remember its a 42" long barrel so its still around a 32" long sight separation
So it will still shoot pretty well I expect

There is also not much adjustment there so to shoot it any great distance he’d need an additional tang sight, so it’ll be plenty accurate

Correct @MSL windage on both sights and elevation by filing down the fore sight
So it will be get it up to speed at around 1800 fps
File down the fore sight to bring it up to poa at around 50m and then it's just Kentucky elevation from there out to wherever you want to shoot

Round ball loose speed and power really fast
So a .50 cal is stretched on a red deer at 75m

    No offence taken
    It's a steep learning curve
Next one might have a Skinner sight on the base of the barrel
Looking for a reliable 100m hunting flintlock rifle for both power and accuracy

Just re shaped the island around the lock and made a template of it with the lock screw locations as a reference

Transferred it to the other side

And shaped it to the lines
Now both the sides are practically identical

So now I have stripped some of the brass parts and started working off the tool marks
A couple more little jobs to do and then it's on to finishing the stock and Browning the barrel, lock and trigger plate

All the metal parts are being browned now and will take a day or two to finish
Gives me time to get another dozen coats of schaftol on the stock
This is the fun bit after a lot of very tricky bits

Got bored waiting for the Browning solution to get its job done
So stuck a block of mild steel in the mill and whittled it into this period correct front sight
It has plenty of height for me to file down and lift the point of impact to what ever I decide works
I will face the back edge with silver solder once it's the height I want

    Done
Browning went very well and has nice deep old rust colour and texture

Just needs a trigger guard big enough for the double triggers

@Scout you are a glutton for punishment with a stack of projects with me already !

But you know I am a sucker for double rifles and muzzleloaders
So a muzzleloading double rifle is like drugs to an addict

    Fantastic figure in that stock!

What solution are you using to brown the steel?
