There is copper/copper and copper/brass joints to make.
copper to brass can use silphos. just don't get brass hot. if it is pink it is going to melt. Needs flux too. idk if it is helpful but pink flux is shit. white flux works effectively.

@2post what would you recommend I use to clean up the 40mm pipe? It is old stuff, so pretty tarnished etc.
I was thinking of a wire wheel and sand paper before some kind of acid flux etc? Am I on the right track?

If you are using silphos, just get it 'Bright' with sand-paper, wipe with clean-cloth, dont touch it with fingers
