Sounds like it's an enfield of some sort. That being the case lots of light coats of raw linseed oil
Thin it right down and do multiple coats.
For sporting arms you can't beat true oil

Sorry I meant spanish mauser.
Ok final problem, a couple of the screws wont tighten, the woods stripped out,
what would be an acceptable way to repair this,
i'm thinking drill out the hole, and glue in a bit of dowel and drill a new hole?
if this is the correct way to do it, will a pine dowel be ok?
That would work a rougher way is match sticks and glue
done for now apart from the loose screws, just gotta make up some rounds to test it.
not the sunniest day so poor lighting for the pic's
Aaaaaa, The suspense is killing me, YOU have not mentioned what calibre it is??, 6.5x55, 7x57?, , mined it should be a handy goat rifle, Homebrew.357.
I have some red beech and a few other sorts if you'd like to play colour-match, to then turn up appropriate sized dowels on your lathe?
