Reviving this thread, this may be a stupid question so brace yourselves. Would anyone know whether it would produce an acceptable result to chop, reshape and lighten the houge stock like above then just carbon wrap it? Would the wrap add enough strength to the notoriously floppy houge or do you need a more rigid core?

all you need to do to the hogue is to releave the tiny 2mmish wide bit of rubber right at very front of inner channel,the bit of stock closet to muzzle...it is then free floated and cannot touch barrel not in normal use anyway...

Yes I have done that modification before, this particular question is in relation to the objective of ending up with a lighter, better shaped and fitting stock for me. Plus I like tinkering.

I have a Carbon stock coming for my Howa heavy barrel from the USA made by Stocky’s .
It’s the only Carbon option I could find that fits the varmint barrel , the one I’ve bought is a factory second.
It’s going to be a couple of months before it arrives though, because they won’t export out of the USA so I’ve had to use an agent to arrange transport.

A single wrap of carbon and epoxy could add 2-300grams so I wouldn’t use the hogue stock as a blank. Even trimming it right down you would end up with a very heavy stock.

Hey @LMcNab,

Reshaping the factory hogue stock will take off some weight, I did it more for a nicer shape. It wasn't the version with the soft rubber coating, just plastic. Can't say I've noticed it having flex worse than any other synthetic stock.

If you where after maximum rigidity I'd be thinking milling/router a slot down the length of the forend then holding a carbon fiber arrow shaft in place with epoxy.

If doing a full wrap around the stock, I think the inletting would give a bit of trouble if you put a layer of carbon cloth and resin in there. You would need to make the inletting oversize, lay up the carbon back to exactly the right size and shape again. In theory that could be done, I wouldn't try it.

You could easily cut the stock back and the wrap the underside from the pistol grip through to the fore-end in carbon tape. Likely add 80-90g.
Still be a plastic stock but!

@Ground Control I contacted stockys when looking for a long action stock but they didn’t have a NZ distributor. Was it a hassle/expensive being one into the country?

The Stock is for my Australian rifle , so it’s not being imported into NZ .
Stockys doesn’t export so it’s areal pain in the Bum to get one .
In Australia there are companies/ agents who import firearms/ firearm related gear so I’ve had to use one of them .
They purchase the goods in the USA , then batch them all up and ship them in a shipping container usually about twice a year .
They do all the import permits etc , but my Stock doesn’t require anything like that .
My NZ rifle ( Tikka ) wears a Hi-Tec stock which is very good and I highly recommend them .
The reason I’ve bought the Stockys is that I couldn’t find any other Carbon Howa 1500 SA Stock designed for a heavy barrel which one of my Australian Howa’s has , my other one has a Sporter barrel and now sits in a Hi-Tec

PS- the Stock cost me $670.00 au delivered to my door

Cool , he's only an hour and a half from me. He did want to charge an arm and a leg to get a rifle over from a family member for me $1100 was his fee 6 years ago.
