Looks nice now! I refinished a gun of mine in marine grade Spar Urethane in a spray can from Mitre ten. Spray four or five light coats on it in a satin finish and it looks great. Alternatively you can let the varnish cure for a month and then wet sand it, then use 0000 steel wool to remove finer resulting in a near matte finish or apply wood polish to bring the sheen level to your desired shine.
Tung oil hand rubbed in many times bought a plain 10/22 stock up in a nice medium blond finish.
I saw the same issues with birch so didnt bother with dye.
I hear tung oil can cause allergic reactions so read up but I used it with no worries.
I did a JW15 stock in blue on request. The wood is nothing flash as you may expect but fabric dye worked well to preserve the grain visibility with a colour overlaid then matte clear spray and a few coats of beeswax rubbed in worked a treat.
Hi guys, I'm about to start restoring a Baikal M18 single barrel shotgun, all I can get off the net so far, is that the wood stock will be either beech or walnut!!!!
So I'm sure it's beech.....having read this, and as I'm not after a rembrant shall I just use a few coats of Danish oil as a protector.....?
While I might not be as good as I once was, Im as good once as I ever was!
