Red cedar is very soft, great for lure making but too soft for gunstocks in my experience. You would definitely need to use pillars and seal it very well. Light, but probably dense enough.

The Red Beech that you have used is a very strong wood but does split easily lengthwise. My door frames and architraves I did in RB without problems. No doubt Walnut is the Queen of stock timbers but it is great to see someone use NZ Native stuff for sure. I have always wondered what Silver Pine might be like, being super strong and water resistant. In the ChCh Museum there are some pieces of furniture made by cabinet makers with inlays of all sorts of native. Some of it is amazing. Northern Rata could be very interesting too.
